2021 was definitely a busy year for the ENTRUSTED Consortium and our external collaborators. The project timeline in 2021 was marked with many milestones. Some of them signified key developments, for instance, a user consultation process on secure SatCom user needs and use cases. While the other ones highlighted subsequent accomplishments and helped us stay on track with work progress. Let us give you the picture of ENTRUSTED in 2021 by sharing some numbers.

An important achievement in 2021 was the enlargement of the Network of Users (NoU), which currently associates 13 Member States and 7 EU institutions and agencies from the ENTRUSTED Consortium, as well as 2 Member States and 3 EU agencies that act as external collaborators in the ENTRUSTED project. All members of the NoU were involved in an EU-wide survey study aimed at identifying user needs and use cases for future EU GOVSATCOM services. This user consultation process resulted in the collection of 155 questionnaires. Answers provided by survey respondents were aggregated and analysed for the purpose of establishing a consolidated set of user requirements. The draft information on user requirements concerning the provision and access to GOVSATCOM services for the European Commission was developed in the end of December 2021.

ENTRUSTED project partners managed to complete the major part of a review of the state-of-the-art SatCom technology and enabled services for telecommunication satellite systems in Europe. The status quo of related research activities was presented to the ENTRUSTED Consortium, external collaborators and invited national experts during a dedicated online workshop, which took place on 22 September 2021. In addition, the Consortium commenced research on future technology trends that could affect the evolution of secure SatCom services. This is also a subject of online consultations addressed to technological & research stakeholders which were launched in December 2021.

In addition, the ENTRUSTED Consortium initiated the review of existing and relevant Research & Innovation project related to secure SatCom user technologies and services in Europe. This is the first part of research activities that will result in the elaboration of a long-term R&I Roadmap and Coordination Plan to guide any related future developments in compliance with identified user requirements.

In 2021, we also worked intensively on communication and educational activities, including the set-up and development of the ENTRUSTED project website and preparation of an online training. The training will cover fundamental concepts, characteristics and applications of satellite communications, and increase awareness on the EU GOVSATCOM programme.

All project activities carried out in 2021 involved joined effort and required close cooperation between members of the ENTRUSTED Consortium and external collaborators. It took numerous meetings, many online and offline discussions, hours spent on reading, writing and, most importantly, on conceptual work. Here are some numbers:

155 collected questionnaires

51 internal project meetings

2 press releases

5 national meetings

2 Steering committee meetings
